News Concerning the Class

I know the deadline is passed for blogging for this class, but I wanted people to read this. Campbell Brown is on CNN, and there are a number of things wrong with this article.

To start with, the law Brown mentions was created because children were being forcibly removed from their homes by the government up until that point. They were in danger of "losing" them, but instead their children were being stolen. There is a huge difference in this reality, which Brown fails to mention.

Also, Brown keeps mentioning the fact that the boy is "only" a certain part Native American. As if the technical amount of percentage he is Native American makes his identity null and void.

This article just bothered me a lot, in so many ways, and I wanted others (who might still be on this blog, though I wouldn't be surprised if people were too busy with their other finals) to check it out and tell me what they thought. Does anybody else see this as incredibly ethnocentric on Brown's part, or is it just me? Good luck on the rest of your finals everybody!

Good example Chelsea!

How can we think together on the many complex issues raised here in this article.

How does Brown position herself:
race?, class?, gender?, and the intersection of those...
in addition to using her privilege as a front-line journalist (prominant platform, mainstream audiences)?

In what ways are the commenters at the bottom negating/neglecting/ignorant of the histories of colonization, reproductive violence, and forced structural violence in Native communities?

HOw did you feel about her 'advice' to the young Native mother identified by the State as 'unfit?'

Thoughts?

This article is amazing to me..if you have no information on a subject how can you have an opinion? It seems to me that the author does not even have an elementary understanding of the issues Native people face now and have faced in the past. If she did she might be able to see where the Native family is coming from. If cultural and physical genocide had not been part of Native history then issues such as drug use, i feel, would not be an issue. Because of this mother's history and background she is facing the circumstances that can result from losing one's culture and as a result; identity. I think it is very bold of Brown to make these statements when she obviously has no understanding of the circumstances that have led, not only to this situation but to the creation of this law. I think it is imperative that she make an effort to understand the history Native people have had with the united states before making such statements!
